Pilates vs. Resistance Training: What's the Difference?

If you've seen an XFormer, you might look at it and immediately think: Pilates.

That's understandable.

But while Structure draws inspiration from some familiar principles of Pilates-based movement, Structure is not a traditional Pilates studio.

So what's the difference?

What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a movement method traditionally centered around principles including control, concentration, precision, breathing, and coordinated movement.

Depending on the style, Pilates may be performed on a mat or using specialized equipment such as a reformer.

Many people turn to Pilates to develop core strength, body awareness, stability, mobility, and control.

What Is Resistance Training?

Resistance training is a broader category of exercise in which your muscles work against an external force.

That resistance might come from weights, bands, machines, cables, body weight, or specialized equipment.

The goal is to challenge the muscles so they adapt and become stronger and more capable over time.

So Where Does Structure Fit?

Structure sits in its own space.

Our classes combine high-intensity, low-impact resistance training with slow, controlled, Pilates-inspired movement.

We use the XFormer to create resistance and keep muscles working through deliberate pacing and extended time under tension.

That means you'll recognize some principles often associated with Pilates—like precision, control, stability, and intentional movement—but the experience is distinctly strength-focused.

We're not trying to fit neatly into a label.

We're trying to help you get stronger.

What About Lagree?

You may also encounter Lagree when searching for reformer-style or high-intensity, low-impact workouts.

Structure is not a Lagree studio and is not affiliated with Lagree.

While there may be similarities in the use of resistance-based equipment and slow, controlled movements, Structure has its own method, programming, instructor training, and approach.

Which Workout Is Right for You?

There doesn't have to be one winner.

Traditional Pilates may be exactly what you're looking for. Resistance training may be an important addition to your routine. Or you may find that Structure gives you the combination of challenge, control, strength, and community you've been missing.

The best movement practice is one that supports your goals—and one you'll actually want to keep doing.

Experience the Structure Method

The easiest way to understand Structure is to experience it.

Our Foundations class is designed specifically for beginners and introduces you to the XFormer, resistance changes, foundational movements, pacing, terminology, and proper form.

Join us in Boulder or Longmont, Colorado, and see what the Structure method feels like for yourself.
